You have the idea. You’ve checked that it’s a winner. Now, it’s time for the "business" part of the Brevard Children's Business Fair! This is where kids learn the real-world skills—like financial literacy and public speaking—that stay with them long after the fair is over.

Running a business is more than just making something cool; it’s about planning for success. Here is how to help your child prepare for the big day.

Simple Business Math

A good business fair idea only works if your child doesn't spend more than they make! Help your kid boss fill in these three numbers:

  1. The Cost to Make: How much do the supplies cost for one item? (Example: If you spend $20 on beads and can make 10 bracelets, the cost is $2.00 each).

  2. The Selling Price: How much will a customer pay for the product? (Look at similar items online or in stores to pick a fair price).

  3. The Potential Profit: Subtract the Cost from the Selling Price. This is the "reward" for all their hard work!

The Perfect "Elevator Pitch"

When a customer walks up to the booth, many kids feel a little shy. You can help them build confidence by practicing a simple "Elevator Pitch" at home. This is a 30-second speech that explains what they do.

Try practicing this fill-in-the-blank script:

"Hi! My name is [Name], and I created [Business Name]. I sell [Product] for [Target Audience] because [The Benefit/Problem it solves]. Would you like to see how it works?"

3 Final Tips for a Great Market Day

  1. Keep it Simple: It is better to have 15 high-quality items than 50 items that are rushed.

  2. The "Consultant" Rule: As a parent, remember you are the consultant, not the CEO! Let your child set the prices and talk to the customers.

  3. Practice Change-Making: Use some spare cash at home to practice making change for a $5 or $10 bill so they feel ready when the first sale happens.
