FEED YOUR MIND

Feed Your Mind is your go-to spot for helping your kids start a business. We've got tips, tricks, and advice to get them on the right track.

Spring break is just around the corner this March, and while we all love a little extra sleep and sunshine, it’s also the perfect time for a "beta test."

If your child has been thinking about joining the Brevard Children's Business Fair in November, one week of freedom is exactly what they need to move from "I have an idea" to "I have a product." Testing a hobby now gives them plenty of time to pivot, polish, and prepare for the big event later this year.

Here are five fun hobbies that can easily transform into a kid-owned business:

1. Jewelry & Accessory Making

Whether it’s trendy clay bead necklaces or rugged paracord bracelets, handmade accessories are always a hit. Spring break is a great time to experiment with different styles to see which ones people actually want to wear.

2. Pet Services & Treats

Brevard County loves its furry friends! Your child could offer dog walking services or spend the week perfecting a recipe for organic, homemade dog treats. It’s a low-cost way to learn about service-based businesses.

3. Digital Art & Design

If your teen or tween is always on their tablet, they can turn those doodles into dollars. Designing custom stickers or unique bookmarks is a fantastic way to enter the world of digital products. Plus, they are easy to transport and display!

4. Baking the "Signature" Item

Instead of trying to bake everything, have your child focus on one signature item—like the world’s best chocolate chip cookie or a unique lemon bar. Use the week to refine the recipe and get feedback from the toughest critics: friends and neighbors.

5. Garden Helper "Desk Buddies"

With spring in the air, everyone is looking for a bit of green. Your child can start seedlings in small, hand-painted pots and market them as "desk buddies." They are adorable, eco-friendly, and make great gifts.

You have the idea. You’ve checked that it’s a winner. Now, it’s time for the "business" part of the Brevard Children's Business Fair! This is where kids learn the real-world skills—like financial literacy and public speaking—that stay with them long after the fair is over.

Running a business is more than just making something cool; it’s about planning for success. Here is how to help your child prepare for the big day.

Simple Business Math

A good business fair idea only works if your child doesn't spend more than they make! Help your kid boss fill in these three numbers:

  1. The Cost to Make: How much do the supplies cost for one item? (Example: If you spend $20 on beads and can make 10 bracelets, the cost is $2.00 each).

  2. The Selling Price: How much will a customer pay for the product? (Look at similar items online or in stores to pick a fair price).

  3. The Potential Profit: Subtract the Cost from the Selling Price. This is the "reward" for all their hard work!

The Perfect "Elevator Pitch"

When a customer walks up to the booth, many kids feel a little shy. You can help them build confidence by practicing a simple "Elevator Pitch" at home. This is a 30-second speech that explains what they do.

Try practicing this fill-in-the-blank script:

"Hi! My name is [Name], and I created [Business Name]. I sell [Product] for [Target Audience] because [The Benefit/Problem it solves]. Would you like to see how it works?"

3 Final Tips for a Great Market Day

  1. Keep it Simple: It is better to have 15 high-quality items than 50 items that are rushed.

  2. The "Consultant" Rule: As a parent, remember you are the consultant, not the CEO! Let your child set the prices and talk to the customers.

  3. Practice Change-Making: Use some spare cash at home to practice making change for a $5 or $10 bill so they feel ready when the first sale happens.

Now that you have looked through our Master List of 100+ ideas, your child probably has a few favorites! While it is tempting to try tand sell everything, we have found that the most successful young entrepreneurs focus on one good business fair idea and do it really well.

Choosing the right business isn't just about what looks cool—it is about finding the "Sweet Spot" where your child's talents meet what people actually want to buy. Here is how you can help your child narrow down the list and pick a winner for the 2026 Brevard Children's Business Fair.

The 4-Question "Reality Check"

Before you head to the store for supplies, sit down with your child and run their top three favorite ideas through this quick checklist:

  1. The Joy Factor: Does my child actually enjoy making this? If they get bored after making two bracelets, they might struggle to make twenty!

  2. The Skill Test: Does my child already know how to do this, or is it easy to learn? We want them to feel confident, not frustrated.

  3. The Customer: Who is going to buy this? Does it appeal to other kids (like slime), or is it something a grandparent would love (like hand-painted flower pots)?

  4. The Portability: Is it easy to get to the fair? If it is very heavy or breaks easily, it might be tricky to display at a booth.

Standing Out from the Crowd

At the business fair, there might be other kids with similar ideas for entrepreneurship fairs. That is okay! Competition is a part of the real world. Help your child find their "unique twist" by thinking about these three things:

  1. Special Packaging: Can you use a cool ribbon, a hand-drawn sticker, or an eco-friendly bag?

  2. A "Secret Ingredient": Is your slime extra stretchy? Is your jewelry made with local seashells?

  3. A Great Story: Why did your child start this business? People love buying from a "kid-preneur" with a passion.

The "Gut Feel" Tie-Breaker

If your child is stuck between two great ideas, try this: have them close their eyes for ten seconds and imagine themselves standing at their booth in November. Which product are they most excited to hand over to a customer? Usually, their "gut feeling" will tell them exactly which one is the winner!

Next Step: Once the "Winner" is chosen, it is time to talk about the money! Stay tuned for Part 3, where we break down the math, set your prices, and practice the perfect sales pitch.o make sure they are ready for market day!
