Why "Passion Projects" Make the Best Businesses
It’s a Saturday morning in October. While other kids are playing outside, your young entrepreneur is at the kitchen table, surrounded by supplies, working hard to build inventory for the Brevard Children’s Business Fair.

In that moment, there is a big difference between a child who is "working" and a child who is "playing." If your child picks a business idea just because they think it might make a few dollars, that Saturday morning can feel like a chore. But if they are working on a passion project, it won't feel like work at all!
Passion is the Secret Ingredient
When kids choose a business for the Brevard Children’s Business Fair based on something they already love—whether it’s coding, baking, or crafting jewelry—they bring a level of energy that customers can really feel.
Here is why passion beats a "good idea" every time:
Resilience: When things get tough (like a failed batch of cookies), passion keeps them trying.
Authenticity: Kids are the best salespeople when they actually care about what they are selling.
Sustainability: It is much easier to stay focused for months when the topic is something they discuss constantly.
Don’t Just Chase the Dollar
It is tempting to look at what sold well last year and try to copy it. However, we always encourage our young CEOs to look inward first. If your child loves lizards but decides to sell beaded keychains because "everyone does that," they will likely burn out before the fair even starts.
Key Advice: Pick something your child already spends their free time doing. If they are obsessed with it, there is a business hidden in there somewhere!
The Parent's Role: Helping Them Find the "Why"
As a parent, you aren't the CEO—you are the Lead Consultant. Your job is to help them dig deep to find a business idea that sticks for the Brevard Children’s Business Fair. Instead of telling them what to do, ask open-ended questions to help them identify their "why."
Try asking these questions at dinner tonight:
"If you could spend all day doing just one hobby, what would it be?"
"What is a problem you see that you wish you could fix?"
"What is something you’ve made that you are really proud of?"
By following their heart, they aren't just starting a business; they are sharing a piece of themselves with our community.
